It’s reported as the fourth App development platform, just after iPhone, iPad and Android Phone, and even before Android Tablet, by Appcelerator earlier this year. Even with much controversy, Web Apps empowered by HTML-5 standards are increasingly attracting developers world wide. But HTML-5 also has its own problems, as difficulties in cross-platform support, and problems in global standardization, etc. What is the way for mobile developers to adopt this new technology? Where are the fit domains that HTML-5 will manifest its strengths? The gathering of people, resources and information is making cities a more and more complex environment. Different pressures are decreasing cities’ efficiencies, which is against the purpose of cities to facilitate people’s life. Air and water pollution, traffic jam, energy problems, waste disposal, etc, are becoming emergent problematic that almost all major cities are facing. At the same time, information technologies and the Internet are changing the whole world in an amazing way. How to use these technologies to serve the cities, to make the smart, and to make city life better and more efficient, is the key question that “Smart City” is trying to answer, and is attracting attention from governments, companies and organizations.

Information and communication technologies and infrastructures are playing an important role in “Smart Cities”. They are not only helping people in their communications, but go on to interconnect more and more machines from different industries, to make cities’ information travel more freely. Today’s society is generating huge amount of data each second. A better treating of big data can reveal hidden realities. A smart and sometimes artistic visualization of the data can help people easily understand and embrace complicated concepts and ideas.

“Smart City” combines divers technologies, innovation from different industries, connecting governments and enterprises. Mobile Monday and CMoDA CoINNO Lab work together to continue the topic of “GeoCity Smart City” from Beijing Design Week, and invited industry insiders to showcase their activities and share insights about this topic.

With mobile Apps gaining popularity, smart devices are showing its nature of being a media channel. This has made possible the cross-platform interaction and service of TV content and TV ads with their audience.

Some companies have already started exploring in this direction. Viggle can identify TV programs by audio recognition for users to check-in and win gifts; Orange TV Check allows user to check-in TV programs by video recognition, and helps TV programs to promote themselves via social networks; and untaptv also uses audio recognition for users to check-in TV Ads and get coupons. It’s still being debated what types of technology and service are the most suitable to enable people’s TV check-in activities. While more importantly, is to understand what people’s interests are after checking-in. Is it e-commerce, gaming, interaction with the content, or something else.

We have invited pioneering companies around the world of this area, to discuss Smart Devices Services & Innovation for TV Ads.

The positioning of the current Smart Phone market seems quite clear. Dominated by two platforms, iOS and Android, with the major part of profits shared between Apple and Samsung, this market doesn’t seem to leave a lot of space for new comers. Event the traditional players, including Microsoft, Nokia, and HTC, are having a hard time.

But Internet companies are showing increasingly interests into this already very competitive market. While Facebook and Amazon are expected to jump into the Smart Phone business, their counterparts in China are more aggressive in launching their own phones. At the same time, debates go on around whether Internet companies’ Smart Phone will be a right choice, and about where to move towards web based system and Apps.

Firefox-Mozilla’s senior project manager XUE Dongsheng shared their entirely Web based Firefox OS, plus the Firefox App Marketplace. With all its technical advantages, Firefox OS is actively pushing its Web APIs into Open Web standards, to avoid proprietary interfaces. And Firefox’s App Marketplace aims to build a cross-platform Web App distribution channel on all smart phone OS, allowing users to pay for an App once, and have it on all smart devices of different platforms.

Xiaomi Phone has already had a phenomenal success in the Chinese market. Launched in Aug 2011, Xiaomi has shipped more than 3M phones. Combing Miliao (Xiaomi IM), MIUI (Xiaomi customized Android) and the phone itself, Xiaomi has created a cultural phenomenon, with a huge group of loyal fans. (More than 10M users are using it MiLiao service.) With its recent fund raising of $240M, Xiaomi’s extimated market cap is up to $4B. Jessica ZHANG shared with us her view and experience at Xiaomi.

Dianxin OS CEO ZHANG Lei has a rich experience in the Mobile Internet Industry, and shared his understanding of opportunities in the Smart Phone ecosystem, for both entrepreneurs and big Internet companies. The speakers of Mobile Monday Beijing 49th Edition addressed this issue from different angles. They are from 5 companies and institute, including App Annie, TangCha, Central Academy of Fine Art of China, Xianguo, and Adobe China.

1.	Mobile reading market analysis by App Annie
First we let market and data talk – the presentation from Bertrand Schmitt, CEO of App Annie
App Annie is one of the world’s major mobile app statistic analysis providers. Their SDK are used in more than 100,000 app world wide by 13,000+ publishers. Their ranking database is tracking 850,000 apps on iOS, Mac (to be released soon) and Google Play. In the presentation, Bertrand Schmitt shared their analysis regarding the new Newsstand for iPhone and iPad. Interesting observations include:
-	Global downloads increasing slowly (7% from Oct 2011); while global revenue increasing dramatically (282% from Oct 2011);
-	China is ranked top 2 by downloads, but out of top 10 by revenue;
-	The highest revenue per download comes from Norway with $0.75/download;
-	Despite less unites, iPad downloads are ~20% more than iPhone downloads, and revenue is 3 times more: revealing that consumers are much more willing to download and pay on iPad, a much better device for reading

2.	E-Book publishing for mobile reading by TangCha
TangCha is the Pioneer of licenced electronic book publisher on iOS devices in China. So far it has published 12 books in Apple App Store, including the famous biography of Steve Jobs (Simplified Chinese version). Its founder Lawrence Li shared his opinion about electronic reading. Typography is one focus of Tangcha’s effort of increasing mobile reading experience. Chinese typography in the mobile digital world is serious underdeveloped, even comparing to Japanese typography. Tangcha is experimenting new fonts with typography designer and applying new ways of page setting to make reading a more enjoyable and nature experience on mobile devices.

In terms of operation, TangCha is moving from releasing books as an independent app to providing an integrated book shelf

3.	Mobile reading design sharing from Pr. Fei Jun from Central Academy of Fine Arts
Pr. Fei Jun has been working with traditional media publishers to help them release iPad versions of their magazines.
Traditional media publishers face major challenges moving their contents from paper-based magazines to smart mobile devices. It’s definitely not only by generating a PDF version of the magazine and copy to the iPad. Digital designers leverage the various possibilities that smart devices provides to build a digital version of magazines. Pr. Fei Jun shared some principles that he is applying in his daily work with his team.
-	Multimedia features are to be used with caution
Pr. Fei always make sure not to turn a digital magazine into a “video App”. Multimedia contents are only used if they are inline with the whole page, respecting it composition.
-	Page layout is to be re-designed
Pages need to be re-designed. Different layers can be added to a page which can be shown and hidden according to user’s different actions
-	Leveraging interactivity to make a difference
Being interactive, a digital magazine can support complicated logical reasoning. For example, a series quiz is very suitable to be presented in a digital magazine.

4.	Waterfall-flow mobile reading from Xianguo Lianbo
Xianguo Lianbo is one of the earliest and most popular mobile & Internet waterfall-flow reader. Its founder Liang Gongjun shared his rich experience regarding this business in China. Benefiting from its friendly design and user experience, Xianguo is getting a huge user base. But the market is not rewarding enough yet for similar businesses to flourish. Currently Xianguo is facing challenges from low willing of pay users, and strong competition. Xianguo suggests that for a relatively long time, advertising is the main revenue source for this business.

5.	Mobile reading publishing tool kit from Adobe China
Adobe is helping world wide digital publishers to create their publication.
With a global experience, Mark Dong, platform manager of Adobe China, compared the situations in US and in China. In the US, digital publication are aggressively taking the market, even resulting in bankruptcy of book store chains. In China, the market is experiencing some delay, due to lack of willing to pay by the consumers. Adobe also helps digital publisher to differentiate their publication with different design enablers.

Since FourSquare made location check-in popular in 2009, LBS has attracted lots of attention in the mobile industry. Third party LBS providers develop game based location services to obtain more user engagement. Retailers also start to apply this technology to attract more customers. TopShop, the British fashion retailer targeting on young generation, recently works with SCVNGR, a location based gaming developer, to promote their goods when the new semester starts in September. Anyone within 500 meters distance to the retailer’s shops can play games on SCVNGR’s platform. Winners will obtain real world rewards with either discount or goods in the shop.

We tend to see more and more examples like this. How to monetize is always a question for all LBS developers. What is the value proposition of a location? When would a location be payable by clients? In February, MoMo Beijing has brainstormed new services/opportunities can be developed with location. This time, we will discuss how these services can generate value proposition to the users. We will have MoMo Boston & NYC organizer, and SkyHook, a location core engine provider, be with us. They will share successful cases with us in the global market scope. Meanwhile, we will also have local companies in the area of E-Commerce, Gaming, picture sharing, coupon, event organization, etc, and LBS Vision, an independent LBS related observation blog, to share with us their latest thoughts on LBS business models. We hope such communication can help local developers and international LBS companies have a better understanding of mutual market demands and position.

On June 18, "Open Innovation Day 2011" event was successfully held in Guangzhou. This event was jointly organized by China Mobile Guangdong and Orange Labs Beijing, which attracted around 350 developers and 100 mobile internet conpanies from Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Japan. Vice president of China Mobile Guangdong, Qiu Wenhui, and Director of Partnership and Open innovation from Orange labs Beijing, Dr. Ren Zhen, attended the event and made the welcoming speeches. Dr. Ren Zhen introduced the keynotes of "Open Innovation Day" and the open innovation planning and strategy for Orange labs Beijing.

The agenda of the event included "Expert Speeches", "Keynote Speeches", "Roundtable Discussion", "Products Introduction Show" and "Product Demo". A variety of innovative mobile applications and soft wares were shown. This is the first time for Orange and China Mobile Guangdong to jointly organize the event specially targeting at developers. Through on-site display and interaction communication for the new products, new concepts, the developers can access the international most advanced and innovative trends, which is expect to in turn stimulate the mobile innovation actions and business for developers and operators. The Activities not only attracted many well-known software vendors and developers, but also invited some famous scholars, experts and investors to participate, such as Central Academy of Fine Arts Digital Media Studio Professor Fei Jun, and Linephone concept phone designers Tian Fei. All the participants were willing to jointly initiate and promote the twin-engine development for open innovation and open platform, in order to drive the new future for the mobile Internet.

"Open Innovation Day" to make innovation more international

Director of Partnership and Open Innovation Dept. of Orange labs Beijing, Dr. Ren Zhen, delivered the keynote addressing, "France Telecom and open innovation". She said open innovation was the source of future development of mobile Internet, as well as the focus of the development strategy of France Telecom. The developer must have open vision, innovative thinking and ability to research and develop. The traditional style of reproduction and imitation would be difficult to adapt to the pace of future development of mobile Internet, or even face the danger of being eliminated.

It’s said that, the "Open Innovation Day" event was the first time for Orange to cooperate with Chinese domestic mobile application store operator. It allows domestic developers to close contact with global most recent wave of innovation trends, which will help local developers to work with more international perspective and thinking. Furthermore, it will also provide local developers conditions to explore oversea markets.

Open Platform, leveraging the new mobile Internet

The Internet "mobile" era, indicates a unlimited market of innovative mobile soft wares and applications. The explosive growth of application stores of Apple, Google and other open applications store have ledthe "open" competition among major domestic application store operators. With the largest mobile user base, mature experience of market operation, MM (Mobile Market, independently operated by China Mobile Guangdong) of China Mobile, just after its launch, influenced the ecosystem of Chinese mobile application, and attracted the most attention. The partnership with Orange will further extend its platform to international. Orange labs Beijing, casting a tolerant, diverse and win-win platform, will continue to actively expand the cooperation with the parties in the industrial chain integrating their industrial resources together, to bring "openness and innovation" twin-engine power for Chinese mobile Internet industry.

Technology · Design · Life

Neither design nor technology can be discussed alone. Both of them are aiming at delivering a better life. While technology is focused on fulfilling the functionalities of a product/service, design is more about how to present such functions. Nowadays, how to well combine technology and design has become a key to be successful. Apple is such an example. It created a loyal generation which is dedicated to what the brand is insisting: a fashionable and cool lifestyle.

Today, when more and more technologies are getting mature, what’s more? Augmented Reality, LBS, Brain Technology… To what extend can our life been changed by such technologies? And how to present these innovation in a more user friendly form? In this special event, we wish to have a deeper brainstorm with you for these questions.

Cooperated with Beijing Design Week, which will host from 28th September to 3rd October this year, with design topics covering nine industries ( http://www.bjdw.org/en/index.html ), this special MoMo Beijing event will focus on what technology and design can bring to our life. Three sections are included:

Sharing. We invite innovators from both design and mobile technology fields to share their experiences in product design and UX (User Interface, User Experience etc) design. We will also share view on how technolgy and design can change lifestyle which is something key to a succesful product.

Show. And where do you get inspirations? Improv and Music! Beijing Improv, a non-profit improv art organization founded 5 years ago, will bring us a stage show about technology, design and life. We will also have a secret band who will play us a nice song.

If you have met with online gaming or social networking people recently, you probably heard of “free to play” and “virtual goods“

While it remains a mystery to many how something free can make money and why would anyone pay for a virtual haircut, it seems to make a lot of sense to many users and companies.

Among them, Chinese online game companies and China’s shining star Tencent are making very healthy revenues with juicy profit margins (Tencent should announce its 2008 results soon - likely something close to a billion USD in sales and a 50% profit margin, a third of which from online games).

…What about mobile gaming?

Our panelists in January mentioned it as a sector to watch, so we invited mobile gaming entrepreneurs to introduce their content, business and share their perspective on the sector.

How big is the market? What are the most popular games? Who are the mobile game users? What are the market trends in 2009? Free to play? Download? Multiplayer? What are the competitive advantages in this fast moving sector where IP is hard to defend?

We are happy to share that several companies in Japan and Korea are already making million dollars of profit, even from mobile (150 million USD last year for one of them). Now, what is the situation in China?

Telecom operators have launched social networks recently: China Telecom (ChinaQ, web+3D), China Mobile (Mompy.com, web+mobile) and China Unicom (sns.u-powerbook.com, web only). Large SNS are extending their reach to mobile (QQ, Xiaonei) Some specialized players have come up, gathering millions of users

During this 23rd Mobile Monday session on October 27, social network industrialists will share their insights on the present and future of mobile SNS in China, join and find out:

In this session diving into the mobile OS, our speakers will introduce the various platforms competing to control the brains of mobile handsets. Each has its own technical assets, its revenue or licensing model, its supporters, all forming unique co-operative ecosystems which have a direct impact on application and service deployment, as well as on the commercial viability of many software and value-added service developers.

If many end users understand what is Windows Mobile, the little visibility for consumers of names like Symbian, Android or LiMo do not reflect their actual impact on the mobile ecosystem. With Symbian going open source after its acquisition by Nokia, and Android positioned as an open platform, we will discuss :

- What is going to happen to proprietary systems?
- What does it mean for the cost of material for mobiles?
- What kind of impact will it have on services deployment?
- And… what is to gain for end-users?

Ryan Xu
Eloo Mobile

Billy Huang
Symbian

Henry Heung
Google

Jerry Ge
Tuojie
